Idlewood Inn offers a collection service for arrivals at the Toronto Pearson Airport for a small fee. Contact us to purchase this collection service. On arrival at the airport, keep a look out for your driver who will be holding an Idlewood Inn board up at the arrivals exit. If you cannot locate the driver on arrival, please contact the Front Desk Management at Idlewood Inn immediately.
Once you arrive to Idlewood Inn in Scarborough, East Toronto, you’ll need some time to settle in to your new living area, your department, and the college campus. The following is a checklist to help you get started.
Check-in at the Front Desk
As there is paperwork to be completed, check-in for all incoming residents is your primary action to help you settle in quickly. You can also pay your first month’s rent and Meal Plan at the same time. Idlewood Inn management can arrange for currency exchange services if required.
Fill Out a Room Condition Report
Make note of any damage or missing items in the room as soon as you move in, to ensure you are not responsible for any previous damages. Return the Form to the Front Desk on completion.
Meet Your Fellow Residents
For larger groups, Idlewood Inn will hold a welcoming meeting for new residents to introduce them to the facilities and other residents. The best way to meet other residents is at meal times. Join the food line-up, sit at a table with other people, and introduce yourself to get to know your new neighbours.
Set Up Your Room
Use the tips at “What to Bring” as a reference on how to outfit your room and get set up with the basic necessities.
Get to Know Your Faculty Department
When at college or university, meet your grad secretary, your supervisor, and others in your new Department. Find out as much as you can, including assignment or related training sessions to attend. Spend time getting acquainted with the locations and access requirements of photocopiers, mailboxes, bulletin boards, and other resources in your faculty department.
Open a Bank Account
Branches of most banks are located within easy access to the Residence. Consult individual banks for documentation needed to open an account.
Pay Tuition Fees
Contact your local College or University if you have not paid your tuition fees. Fees for your education are solely your responsibility.
Sign Up For MSP
Complete an application form for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) to obtain health care coverage in Ontario. It is recommended to sign up as soon as you start residing in Ontario, to allow for processing time. Coverage does not come into effect until about three months after you arrive. You may require private health insurance during this period. Contact your College or University for further information.
Vehicle Documents
If you are bringing or purchasing a car to use while at the College, and are a new resident to Ontario, you’ll need to register, license and insure your vehicle, and obtain an Ontario license unless you apply for a visiting student permit. Many students get around by walking, cycling, busing or using the “GO” train service to get around.
Get Involved!
There are several opportunities to dive in and get involved at Idlewood Inn when you arrive, from attending one of the many group meetings happening most nights of the week during the academic year, to participating on one of the many Resident Committees, as a resident representative to arrange events. Your experience is what you make of it!
